Quantic Dream, the developer behind Heavy Rain and Indigo Prophecy, showed off a brand-new game engine at GDC today, a spectacular demonstration of graphics and motion capture running on Sony's PlayStation 3. According to a report from Vox Games, the six-minute animation tech demo is not, Quantic Dream head David Cage, an early look at the developer's next game.

Update: Now there's official video, courtesy of the PlayStation.blog and Quantic Dream.

Cage showed the video at his "Technologies to Support Emotion" talk at GDC, saying the prototype was running in real-time on the PS3. He said the video was about a year-old, with the current version of the tech, dubbed "Kara," having twice the number of features of the video you see above captured by Vox.

Quantic Dream's demo was more than just sharp rendering tech, with the performance capture tracking the voice, body and facial movements of an actor. Heavy Rain fans may remember that that PS3 game had roots in a tech demo called "The Casting," an interactive precursor to the full game.

Even though Kara isn't an actual game & this is just what possibilities the new tech & QuanticDreams can do on a Sony system, i'm very much waiting for they're next title.
