This week, Sony implicated online hacker group Anonymous in the attacks against its networks, stating that a file bearing the mob's motto, "We are legion," was found buried in the PlayStation Network before it went down. Anon, for its part, has confidently retorted that it won't be found responsible.

"If a legitimate and honest investigation into credit card theft is conducted, Anonymous will not be found liable," it stated. "While we are a distributed and decentralized group. Our ‘leadership’ does not condone credit card theft.

"We are concerned with the erosion of privacy and fair use, the spread of corporate feudalism, the abuse of power and the justifications of executives and leaders who believe themselves immune personally and financially for the actions the undertake in the name of corporations and public office."

What happened with the PSN does go against Anonymous' usual MO, especially with the group declaring it would leave PSN alone. The timing, however, would make Anonymous a clear suspect, with its pre-stated war against Sony already publicized. That just makes me think that whoever did hack the PlayStation Network is using Anonymous as a cover.
What do you reckon? Is Anon to blame, or is it a wolf in Anon's clothing?

Why would they admit to doing this? They are the prime suspects in my view. It's too bad they can't control their membership if in fact this so called leadership didn't do it. Hopefully many of them will get caught and will spend time in prison where they belong. They can't be too happy with all the attention they are getting by law enforcement agencies at this point.

Hopefully it won't be too long before some of them are held accountable.

I have no sympathy for any of them.

I've been watching Anon for 10 years. This would be the very first time they ever went after credit cards. Sony whole position on their outage. Smells to the high heavens right from the beginning...

it all depends if they provided the tools to steal the database to the actual thief.

Say I hate GM. Say I make a webpage on how to create a universal electronic car unlocker that works on any car. And I give it away to alot of people while encouraging people to play illegal pranks on GM cars. Is it my fault if someone steals a car?

And you know them personally? Seriously. I hope they pay a big price for any of the cyber terrorism they've been involved in. These guys/gals aren't robin hood. They need to spend time in prison. Period!

It's getting old watching people try and stand up and defend them. Sony is the victim in this crime and so are the millions of people forced to be without PSN. That's not to mention all the personal data stolen and potential identity theft that might arise out of this.

Yup. Anonymous encouraged people to commit a crime against Sony. it's their fault that someone stole something unexpected during their crime.

The real crime here has been sony's total disregard for network security. How about sony's disregard for everybody. Haven't they proved their incompetence long before this outage?

It just gets really old watching all the so called "know it alls" who seem to think they know what is going on and trying to give these cyber losers a free ride.

They belong in prison. Hopefully they'll be there soon.

About the only thing I think Anon did ok was the protests at the "Church" of Scientology.

Still, they should be dealt with on a person by person basis, not as a whole , since by nature of the internet, anyone can be Anonymous.

I am not defending Anon I just provide information for people to make intelligent conclusion. I will point this out once again. Everyone here knows about some types of hacking on psn for a long time. We all heard this and that. I was always amazed by the fact that psn was so wide open. But as long as it was nice hacks. Like getting people old Home rewards that was OK. That was the rash of what we have been dealing with now...

Explain this to me how do you justify attacks on anyone. If your in the United States then isn't freedom of religion protected? No matter how strange it is to you....

Yes freedom of religion is protected, thing is from what I've read I consider Scientology more of a scam than a religion, but you're right, it doesn't exactly justify the attack. My respect for that went right out the window when I learned of them terrorizing that young girl over the net.

Security expert: Sony used outdated software before Playstation Network breach | VentureBeat

Security expert: Sony used outdated software before Playstation Network breach..

Sony was running older versions of the Apache Web server software to run its online gaming network, the Playstation Network (PSN), before hackers cracked the network and stole sensitive information from more than 100 million users, a security expert said in a testimony to Congress Wednesday.

Purdue University security expert Dr. Gene Spafford told Congress that security experts knew Sony was running outdated versions of the Apache Web server software that did not have a firewall installed. Sony said hackers were able to breach the PSN and steal sensitive data while the company was fending off denial of service attacks from Anonymous, an online hacker group that typically takes up politically charged causes.

“My personal conclusion from reviews of reports in the press and discussions at professional meetings is that operators of these systems… continue to run outmoded, flawed software, fail to follow some basic good practices of security and privacy, and often have insufficient training or support,” Spafford said in his testimony to Congress.

All that is what I keep hearing. Sad that is took this mess to make Sony see that this set up won't cut it.

Granted Sony make electronics, not software, so they would have limited experience with this, and those with limited to no experience get complacent.

So your basing your opinion on what you read on the Internet? So if I start harassing you on the internet and lets say I 'm a Roman Catholic. Do you blame me or the RC church? There's a lot of weird and sometimes goofy religions out there. Who are we to judge?

It doesn't really matter what Sony makes. If they're going to slap their brand name on a massive worldwide network providing services such as software downloads, paid memberships, personal information storage and credit card transactions, then they'd better find someone with experience in that field to run the show. I don't know a bloody thing about cars but I can still find a good mechanic.

I saw that, but I saw at one website that info was redacted. The website reported that as being fallacious.

So it may have been misinformation that went viral. I don't know for sure. So it might be prudent to wait a few days to see if Sony confirms or denys it. Or a more trusted source, one that verifies claims before posting, will verify it.
