Madmunki is today unveiling a slew of new content for the experimental PlayStation Home environment, Spunland. The latest update brings a new and improved weekly King of Spun contest, new rewards for spending your Spun points on and a host of new Spun functionality, including a lot more rabbits to catch! On February 13, Spunland will have been spinning away on the Home servers, entertaining, confusing and spinning people out for a whole year. There have been more than nine updates since its initial launch in the EU last February (US launch was July 2013), from initial bug fixes and user requested features to the more general, ongoing evolution of the experiment that is Spunland. The first big addition to Spunland was the 'Underspun' mode. In Underspun, what you thought you knew about Spunland is flipped on its head. In Underspun – which can be accessed by exiting the Spunland session upon spawning - you become the Lumino Spunner, all of the other players become ghosts and you earn Spun Points not by catching rabbits, but by creating them. If at any point the Underspun player is touched by a ghost they are ejected from Underspun. Underspun has been significantly reworked for the anniversary update, with a more accessible means of entry, and a new world with its own parallel logic. Only one player can be in Underspun at any one time, for all of the other players in Spunland they see the Lumino running around creating holes from which rabbits spring for them to catch. This special birthday update also sees a reworking of the much-loved 'King of Spun' contest. Introducing a competitive edge to Spunland, the weekly contest allowed players to compete for Spun points, with the lucky winner (whoever could amass the most by a certain time) crowned in a coronation ceremony conducted by the top-hatted steward of Spunland, Uncle Spun. All of this remains true for the new contests (albeit with a new crown and bespoke event graphics) , but now the contest will last for only 30 minutes and all who enter will have their scores set to zero to ensure that the contest remains fair - on many occasions previously, the Kings of Spun won through manic persistence, in some cases grinding for Spun points for up to 5 hours before the allotted Coronation time. Special events have always been and will continue to be a key part of the Spunland experience. From early forays by madmunki into Spunland as the Dukes of Spun (on Spunday Sundays), through the Kings of Spun contests to seasonal themed versions of Spunland such as Spuno'ween and Spun'mas - the events provide a way for madmunki to interact with its players. The themed versions keep the whole surreal environment fresh and provide another level on which different versions of Spunland can exist in parallel. Each new update is also completely compatible with these other versions of Spunland ensuring that there are always multiple flavours of Spun to sample. Come visit Spunland from the 12th of February. What fun can you make?
I'm really liking the update to the King of Spun, and I would agree. It seems a bit fair for many of the players to have just 30 minutes to play than playing for eternity until the deadlined hour. I know mine was a huge hassle, but this will keep it legit for everyone. Hopefully, we won't have too much trolls or previous winners stealing crowns.
Seems like they released the purple crown this week, giving the wearer a speed boost when worn. I think they will be bring back the old white crown and add a new orange crown for their King of Spun events. I've asked them about it, and they will think on it, maybe mix them up a little each week.
